TOUR DESCRIPTION

​

In this bird photography trip we will explore different places in the Andean mountains that offer outstanding opportunities to portrait a wide variety of colorful and amazing birds, including some endemic species. Most of the photography sessions will take place in nature reserves or private properties with adequated spaces to attract birds such as feeders, gardening plants, and some sessions will be made in the field along trails to look for particular species tha do not visit feeder stations

The tours begins in Bogota, the capital city of the country, from here we will explore a couple of spots in the surroundings of the city, mostly hummingbird feeders that attract some endemic species

From Bogota, we will flight to the city of Cali  where spend 3 nights in a nice lodge, from here we will explore different elevations visiting amazing feeder areas and wonderful forest.

Our route continues towards the city of Manizales and its bird-rich surroundings, where we'll visit different lodges and reserves at different elevations where we can photograph many tanagers, hummingbirds, mountain toucans, antpittas and many more amazing species

​

From Manizales in the Central Andes region we depart towards the Western andean mounatins from where we visit the town of Jardin and the amazing Andean Cock of the Rock lek, one the impressive highlights of the trip, but also we will have the opportunity to photograph other fantastic species such as some hummingbirds and incredible tanagers and the endemic Yellow-eared parrot.​​

ITINERARY

​

DAY 0

Depending on your arrival time at Bogota airport, Pick up at airport and transfer to hotel.

DAY 1

In the morning we visit hummingbird feeders where we can see different species such as: Sparkling violetear, Golden-bellied Starfrontlet, White-bellied Woodstar, Lesser Violetear, Buff-tailed Coronet, Collared Inca among other species of birds. After a nice session we will go to airport to take flight to Cali

DAY 2

Visit Finca La Florida El bosque de las Aves / San Felipe in Km 18 area for the whole day. This is session in feeders for Multicolored Tanager, Red-headed Barbet, Andean/Highland Motmot, Green Jay, Chestnut Wood-quail, White-thorated Quail dove, Crimson-rumped Toucanet, Sickled-winged Guan, Saffron-crowned, Flame-rumped, Golden-naped, Golden Tanagers, Litttle Tinamou

DAY 3

1 hour drive towards Queremal town. All day session at El Descanso - Doña Dora feeders. Toucan Barbet, Emerald Toucanet, Silver-throated, Rufous-throated, White-lined Tanagers, Green Thorntail, Rufous-gaped Hillstar, Crowned Woodnymph, Purple-bibbed Whitetip, Green Honeycreeper, Black-headed Brushfinch

 

DAY 4

All morning  photographing hummingbirds and tanagers at Finca Alejandria, then 4 hours drive to Manizales, overnight in Recinto del Pensamiento, Manizales

Long-tailed Syplh, Booted Racket-tail, White-bellied Woodstar, Blue-naped Chlorophonia

DAY 5

1 hour drive to Rio Blanco reserve, all day session in antpitta feeders and hummingbird area,

Rio Blanco: Chestnut-crowned Antpitta, Brown-banded Antpitta, Buff-breasted Mountain-tanager, Slaty Brush-finch, Green-and-black Fruiteater, Collared Inca, Bronzy Inca, Buff-tailed Coronet

 

DAY 6

Visit to Los nevados National Park area in the morning, Then visit to Termales del Ruiz for afternoon session, then drive back to Recinto del Pensamiento hotel.Buffy Helmetcrest, Tawny Antpitta, Rainbow-bearded Thornbill, Scarlet-bellied Mountain Tanager, Lachrymose Mountain tanager, Shining Sunbeam, Great sapphirewing, Buff-winged Starfrontlet

 

DAY 7

All day session at Hacienda El Bosque then back to hotel.

Gray-bellied Mountain-toucan, Hooded Mountain Tanager, Andean Guan, Equatorial Antpitta, Barred Fruiteater, Crescent-faced Antpitta, Gray-browed Brush-finch, White-throated Quaildove

DAY8

All morning session at El Color de Mi Reves,

in the afternoon 1 hour  30 min drive Hotel Tinamu Reserve in the Cauca Valley.

Black-billed Mountain-toucan, Ocellated Tapaculo, Blue-capped Tanager, Mountain Velvetbreast, Sword-billed Hummingbird, Slate-crowned Antpitta, Bicolor Antpitta

DAY 9

Photo session at the feeders of Tinamu Reserve during the morning, in the afternoon 4 hours drive to Jardin town, overnight in Jardin

Western Emerald, Black-throated Mango, Green Hermit, Guira Tanager, Blue-necked Tanager, Gray-headed Tanager, Grey-headed Dove, Scrub Tanager, Crimson-backed tanger, Blue gray Tanger

 

DAY 10

Morning visit to Mirador El Roble for the morning, feeders for Chestnut naped Antpitta,  Chami Antpitta, Slaty Brush-finch, Mountain Velvetbreast, Grass-green Tanager, Tourmaline Sunangel, Masked Flowerpiercer, then drive 2 hours to jardin town through good forest, chances for Yellow-eared parrot and mixflocks on the way, back town and the  vist specatcular lek of Andean Cock of the Rock, overnight at Jardin

DAY 11

Visit to the best place to see and photograph Oilbird, plus other species at feeders such as Crested Ant Tanager and Scarlet-bellied Grackle, Blue-necked Tanager, Green Jay, Black-chested Jay and more, then drive to Medellin, to finish the tour, overnight close to international airport
